- New York is terrible. When someone laughs at night you can hear it for miles. It makes you feel so lonesome and depressed (Salinger 81).
- This quote emphasizes Holdens loneliness and depression expressed throughout the story. He feels so small in a world so big, and in a city so big.
- This quote ties into Holden's loneliness and cowardliness. He is not willing to fight or stick up for himself, even if someone stole his things. He would just rather remove himself from the conversation. He also calls himself yellow, relating to the cowardliness he expresses in the quote. The color yellow symbolizes that he will say something, but will not follow through after that. He is not willing to stand up for what he believes is right.
- I wish I knew who swiped my gloves at Pency. Not that I would've done much about even if I had known. I'm one of those yellow guys (Salinger 88).
- Holden sits alone in the dorm smoking a few cigarette, telling the reader that he is lonely and depressed. The closed curtains add to the loneliness and depression of Holden blocking out the outside world.
