  • It's nice to see you! Call me, Jose.
  • It's good to see you again! You can call me Nelly. You are very much welcome here.
  • Thank you for welcoming me in your home. It's good to see you all again, especially Nelly and Adelina, whom I've played fencing before.
  • It is our pleasure to welcome you, Jose. They also missed playing with you!
  • You are a very thoughtful and beautiful woman, Nelly. I have been thinking about you lately. I really would like to know more about you.
  • That's very nice of you, Jose. I'd love to know more about you, too.
  • Remember that famous time when Antonio Luna and Jose Rizal almost got into a duel because of a girl? The girl in the middle of that madness was Nellie Boustead.
  • " Nelly is very good to me. She's very beautiful and thoughtful. We are having a good time together...I would love to marry Nelly. "
  • Rizal and Nellie met in Biarritz, where Nellie’s wealthy family hosted Rizal’s stay at their residence on the French Riviera.
  • I would like to ask for your blessing to marry your daughter, Mrs. Boustead.
  • I'm sorry, but I don't think I can trust you to be a good provider for my daughter, Jose.
  • I love you . I want to marry you, Nelly.
  • During his stay at the beautiful Biarritz vacation home, Rizal learned of Leonor Rivera’s engagement and thought of pursuing a romantic relationship with Nellie, who was classy, educated, cheerful, and athletic.
  •
  • “Now that you are leaving I wish you a happy trip and may you triumph in your undertakings, and above all, may the Lord look down on you with favor and guide your way giving you much blessings, and may your learn to enjoy! My remembrance will accompany you as also my prayers.”
  • After strengthening their relationship, Rizal wrote letters to his friends, telling them about his intention to marry her. They were all supportive, including Antonio Luna.
  • Although they seemed like the ideal couple, marriage for Rizal was still not meant to be. Nellie's mother did not approve of Jose to be the husband of Nellie. Rizal also refused to convert his faith. But their friendship must have been strong enough because they ended up being friends after all the drama.
  • I would love to marry you too, Jose. If that's the case, then you need to convert to Protestantism.
  • The breakup between the very civil and educated couple was far from bitter as the two parted as friends. When Rizal was about to leave Europe in April 1891, Nelly sent him a goodbye letter.
