Storyboard Text

  • Serena and Dan are walking in the woods, and Serena expresses her concerns about the upcoming test. Dan tells her not to worry and offers to help her study.
  • Dan, I don't think I am going to pass the Fridays geometry test.
  • Ahh don't worry Serena. I can help you study if you want
  • Dan introduces Serena to the concept of sine and cosine and explains how to use them
  • Yeah sure.
  • Alright so sine is the ratio of the opposite side to the hypotenuse , while cosine is the ratio of the adjacent side to the hypotenuse. The opposite and hypotenuse are being used, use sine for the calculations. If the adjacent and hypotenuse are used, use cosine.
  • Can you give me an example?
  • Sure. Lets find the angle of elevation of that tree to see if you need to walk 15 feet to reach the tree whose height is 10 feet. So, According to the problem, the height of the tree = 10 feet,Base of the triangle is = 15 feet tanθ = 10/15 = θ = tan - 12/3 = 33.69°
  • Serena and Dan come across a river and need to cross it. Dan uses trigonometry to calculate the the angle of elevation of a tree to see if Serena needs to walk 15 feet to reach the tree whose height is 10 feet.
