  • Exposition
  • Conflict
  • Climax
  • A wealthy man once owned a dog and a cat in that town. The dog had served his master faithfully for many years, but because he was missing his teeth, he was unable to defend himself. However, he was a great guide and companion for the daughter who was away from home attending school at a convent along with the strong and cunning cat.
  • Rising Action
  • A mystical ring was sent by the owner's cat and dog to his daughter. The cat was to protect the ring and drop it, and the old man told the dog to accompany the cat across the river. They committed to doing their best to avoid having to swim over a river because there was no other option when there was no bridge or boat available.
  • Falling Action
  • The dog misplaced the ring just before they reached the other bank, and they were fatigued since the river was broad and the water was moving quickly. They searched everywhere, but they couldn't locate anything, so they went back to tell their owner about the terrible loss. But when the dog approached the house, he suddenly grew so frightened that he turned and fled, never to be seen again.
  • Resolution
  • The dog grabbed a magic ring as they attempted to swim into the river. I am strong and capable of looking after it, the dog remarked. Plus, you can't swim. The dog threatened to kill the cat if she didn't give up the ring, but the cat eventually gave in.
  • The master inquired as to why the cat had returned so swiftly and what had happened to her friend while the cat carried on with her own. Despite her fear, the terrified cat described how the dog had fled and how the ring had vanished. The dog was punished by having its tail cut off after the master, who had been furious after hearing her tale, ordered that all of his people and dogs join the search.
  • Since that time, each dog greets the other by asking, Are you the old dog that lost the magic ring? If so, your tail must be severed. Then, to prove that he is not the guilty one, each wags his tail and flashes his teeth. Since then, cats have developed a fear of the water, and if they can avoid it, they won't swim across a river.
