  • Guys like us, that work on ranches, are the loneliest guys in the world. They got no family. They don’t belong no place.

  • A guy goes nuts if he ain't got nobody. Don't make no difference who the guy is, long's he's with you. I tell ya, I tell ya a guy gets too lonely an' he gets sick.

  • Companionship is important.
  • You can talk to people, but I can't talk to nobody but Curley. Else he gets mad. How'd you like not to talk to anybody?
  • George and Lennie are friends from the beginning of the story. During this time period, most men looking for work were loners and had no one but themselves to look out for. Lennie has George to look out for him and protect him.
  • Lennie walks in on Crooks in the stable and strikes up a conversation with him even though he is black. Crooks laments about the loneliness and isolation he has felt during his lifetime. Crooks craves any type of companionship and soon warms up to Lennie.
  • Companionship is important.
  • Curley's wife, like Crooks, lacks healthy relationships. Curley's wife is not taken seriously by anybody as she is a woman in the 1930s and is married to someone she does not like. She is unhappy and lonely.
