Storyboard Text

  • As the cost of food increased, women demanded bread and criticized the King and his "deficit" wife, Queen Marie Antoinette, for their conduct on October 5, 1789, at the Tuileries Palace, calling them frivolous and excessive. The queen, according to the women, contributed to the enormous debt that France was attempting to pay off. They desired the return of their rulers to Paris so that they may pay them any visit they wished. The royal family was consequently compelled to travel back to Paris, give their nation's ladies bread, and spend the following three years as revolutionaries' prisoners.

  • Maximilien Robespierre committed treason and organized an army to assassinate republicans in in order to keep the revolution. The situation made the people of France fearful and prevented them from speaking up. Anyone from the elite to lowest classes, would be executed by them because their only objective was to keep the revolution going. This catastrophe, brought on by Robespierre, who was detained on July 27th, 1794, and killed the following day, would result in the deaths of 40,000 people.
  • When Napoleon Bonaparte was nine years old, he was sent to France to train for the military. At the age of 20, he was eager to prove himself worthy of being a leader and went on to do whatever it took. He quickly became involved in the French Revolution and had many successes that helped him rise to the position of political leader. With his power, he was able to depose the governing board of the Directory and proclaim himself Emperor of France, after which he implemented policy changes that benefited the entire country.
