Storyboard Text

  • Oedipus is born to King Laius and Queen Jocasta, but an oracle warns King Laius that one day his son will kill him and marry his wife. To prevent this tragic prophecy from becoming true, King Laius orders a servant to pin Oedipus' ankles to a tree and let the beasts take him.
  • However, the servant was unable to follow through with King Laius' order and gave Odepius to a shepherd. The shepherd decided to give Odepius to King Polybus of Corinth and Queen Merope, who then adopted him as their own. One day, Odepius is told that King Polybus and Queen Merope are not his birth parents. Growing suspicious, Oedipus consults an oracle and is told the same prophecy King Laius was given: he will kill his father and marry his mother.
  • In an attempt to prevent the oracle's prophecy, Oedipus leaves Corinth and travels to the city of Thebes. During his travel, he crosses pathways with King Laius (not knowing Laius is his birth father), and they have a dispute. In self-defense, Oedipus kills King Laius and part one of the prophecy is fulfilled.
  • As Oedipus continues his journey, he encounters a Sphinx, who challenges him with a riddle as she hopes to tear him apart. However, Oedipus defeats the Sphinx's riddle and passes into the city of Thebes safely.
  • Queen Jocasta's brother, Creon, had earlier declared that whoever defeated the Sphinx and save the city would be crowned King of Thebes and take Queen Jocasta as their wife. This was declared because the King of Thebes, King Laius, had been killed (unknowingly by Oedipus). Oedipus inherits the throne and Jocasta's hand in marriage, and they eventually have 4 children together. The second part of the prophecy has been fulfilled.
  • Several years later, through multiple and complex events, the truth is uncovered that Oedipus unknowingly killed King Laius (his birth father) and married his mother (Queen Jocasta). Discovering this truth, Queen Jocasta commits suicide and Oedipus stabs both of his eyeballs. Oedipus is then exiled from Thebes and travels with the guide of his 2 daughters, Antigone and Ismene, to the desert until he eventually dies in Colonus.
