- The March girls start spending time at the Laurence's’ house. Meg loves to walk in the greenhouse there, and Amy loves to look at the artwork. Beth loves Laurence’s piano, but she is still afraid of him. Later, Beth thanks him by making him slippers.
- At Amy's school, the girls trade pickled limes. Amy tells her enemy, a girl named Miss Snow, that she will not get any limes. In revenge, Miss Snow tells the teacher, who has banned limes in class, of Amy's stash.
- Jo and Meg are going to see a play with Laurie, and Amy would like to join them. Jo tells her, quite rudely, that she is unable to go since she was not invited.
- At the first party, Meg hears people gossiping that Meg's mother must be intending for Meg to marry Laurie for his money.
- She's in it for the money!

- When Marmee leaves the girls alone, Marmee delivers them a lesson on the importance of everyone doing at least a little work while shes gone. They learn the lesson by ignoring their responsibilities and doing nothing in their free times.
- Laurie invites Jo and her sisters to join them for a picnic tomorrow. When the girls ask their mother whether they can go to the picnic, she lets them go. Jo and Meg plan their outfits for the picnic. Jo persuades Beth, who is very shy to attend the picnic.
