Ruth Ginsburg was born March 15, 1933. Raised Jewish, her parents gave her a love of education and learning. She attended PS 38 for her elementary, then James Madison High School. She attended Cornell University.
Ginsburg graduated from Cornell with a bachelor’s degree, earning high honours in Government and distinction in all subjects. Also in the same year, she married Martin D. Ginsburg and the couple have two children together.
After Cornell, Ginsberg attended Harvard Law School as one of 9 women in a class of 500, often facing gender discrimination - they were excluded from using parts of the library. In her final year, she transferred to Columbia Law School, and graduated top of her class.
Even with all her degrees, it was hard to find work. She finally got a position as a law clerk to Honorable Edmund L. Palmieri, Judge, and worked there for two years. After that she worked as a researcher for the Columbia Law School, eventually becoming the director.
Ginsberg then became a Professor at Rutgers University and taught there for 9 years, while she worked on the American Civil Liberties union and the National Board of directors. She returned to Columbia Law School and became the first women to earn a tenure.
Finally, after all that work, Ruth Ginsberg became a Supreme Justice - the second women ever to serve on the supreme court, and the first Jewish woman to do so."People often ask me 'When will there be enough women on the Supreme Court?' I reply 'When there are 9." People seem shocked by this, but there have been nine men since forever, and no-ones shocked by this."
