- The need for enslaved Africans grew with the European settlement of the Americas. The growing sugar cane demanded many laborers, and the Native Americans could not supply the labor needed.

- Due to the laborer shortage, enslaved Africans were shipped to the Americas, and this slave trade became part of the triangular trade that connected Europe, Africa, and the American continents.

- The triangular trade brought manufactured goods from Europe to Africa, enslaved Africans to the Americas, and raw material from the Americas to Europe. As a result of the triangular trade millions of Africans were shipped to the Americas.
