  • During the Black Death, Monasteries played a significant role in fighting the plague. As a part of the church, monasteries too believed that the plague was of God's doing and therefore responded religious to the disease.
  • Monks and priests were tasked with carrying out the religious practices of the church. In medieval Europe, monks had the responsibility of caring for the sick and dying.
  • As the plague took its toll on cities and towns, the number of those sick and dying rose, with neither the time nor people to carry out all the rituals for the dead and dying.
  • During the Black Death, monasteries became important sites of medical care. The Monks used medical herbs, bloodletting in order to keep the humours in balance, in accordance with the monastic calendar.
  • Due to their perilous duties, Monks and priests were even more susceptible to the plague than others. The "black monks' as they were called, had a responsibility to visit the sick, and were, inevitably, suffers from the plague. This was made worse by the fact that monks lived together in the monasteries.
  • The onset of the plague saw a high death rate among monks at around 40-45% during the black death. Because of this, Pope Clement VI declared that the dying could make confessions to anyone, this was a big deal for the church as only the clergy were permitted to perform such religious rituals.
