- Liesel, her brother, and her parents were all on a train on the way to meet Liesels foster parents. Unfortunately, the brother passes away on the train, so the train comes to a stop so that he can be properly buried. When one of the men is digging his grave, a book falls from his pocket, and Liesel steals it.
- Hans sneaks to the basement with Liesel in the middle of the night to read books to her.
- Hans takes a Jew named Max into his basement and hides him from the Nazis there.
- Max gets sick from being in the basement for so long. Soon, Hans fears Max may die and struggles to find a way to hide his body. Eventually Max gets better and Hans doesn’t have to worry about his body anymore.
- Hans gives a Jew that is being beaten a piece of bread. His punishment is going off to war. Rudy’s father has to go to war too.
- Liesel was reading in the basement when a bomb when off nearby! Everyone close to her died from the bomb, but since she was in the basement, she was okay. The Mayor and the mayors wife take her in and eventually adopt her.
