The Prince announces that the bloodshed between the two families has gone on long enough and that anyone who violates the civil peace again will be executed. He says he'll converse to Capulet and Montague about it more directly; Capulet follows him out the door, the brawlers scatter, and Benvolio is left alone with his uncle and aunt, Montague and Lady Montague.

Benvolio responds that he had seen Romeo strolling through a grove of sycamores outside the city and had avoided him since he appeared unhappy. Concerned about their son, the Montagues inform Benvolio that Romeo has been spotted walking alone among the sycamores, gloomy. They go on to say that they have tried but failed to figure out what is bothering him.
  • When Benvolio sees Romeo approaching, he pledges to find out why he is sad. The Montagues leave soon. Benvolio goes over to his cousin. Romeo informs Benvolio that he loves Rosaline, but that she does not reciprocate his feelings and has pledged to live a life of purity.
