- Will Horford Burton lived in Ireland during the 1800s, it was a really hard time for him and the Irish people because it was the time around the Irish potato famine, Mr. Horford had the idea of moving to the United States and finding a better job as a coal miner in western Pennsylvania.

- as an immigrant from Europe, Mr. Horford's journey to the United States was uncomfortable. the overseas journey for immigrants was very difficult Mr. Horford was forced to travel in the below-deck area, many became ill during the long voyage across the Atlantic on the cramped and dirty deck. European immigrants like Mr. Horford had to stop at Ellis Island in New York to contain diseases.
- Mr. Horford and Irish immigrants experience difficulties with American citizens. People who oppose Immigration are called nativists. many of them believed that the Irish immigrants are taking jobs from American citizens. Nativists demanded a literacy test for immigrants. Congress passed a literacy test in 1917 to keep people out of the U.S who hardly speaks English
