Meg always envies the luxuries and the rich, her ambition is to be wealthy once more, with a large mansion, many servants, and valuable items. However, she ends up falling in love with John who is a caring, honest man but is poor and isn’t capable of providing her with all these luxuries. Also, Meg tries to be good and loving like her mother and she goes to her for advice. Since she’s is the oldest sister, she’s Marmee’s right hand in running the household. Meg is the most propriety minded out of her sisters and is the most responsible as well. She is romantic, sweet-natured, pretty, and has a love for elegance, like Amy. Meg can sometimes change her personality to please others which is a trait that comes back and forth.
Elizabeth March
Beth is kind, sweet, shy, quiet, angelic, and musical. She loves to play the piano and sing. Beth enjoys the company of her kittens and taking care of her dolls. She tries to please others like Meg. Her purity was frequently a supportive characteristic that kept the family together during difficult times. Like Jo, that’s her top concern for she has so much love for her family, as she feels the most comfortable around them. Beth struggles with minor flaws like how she complains about doing housework and washing the dishes. However, out of all the girls, Beth has by far the least amount of flaws. She is considered the “angel in the house”.
Josephine March
Jo is very outspoken, brave, daring, candid, caring, adventurous, ambitious, tempered and principled. Jo is a dreamer and a scribbler, she is the happiest when reading or writing, filling page after page with stories or plays. She tends to be a bookworm in her free time until her eyes give out. Jo is a natural leader and values her family above all, she is willing to make sacrifices for them. Jo is not feminine enough like her sisters because she's a tomboy, doesn't like any form of romance, and always speaks her mind.
Amy March
Amy is artistic, energetic, confident, refined, outgoing, ambitious, and self-centered. She’s the youngest of the family and she fits the stereotype of the spoiled youngest child especially by Marmee, Meg, and Beth. However, Jo reminds Amy where she stands. She’s a beautiful, stately child mindful of her manners. At times she could be selfish and only put herself first which is the complete opposite of the rest of her sisters. Amy is the painter in her family, she’s the most passionate about art with such a talent. One of her biggest dreams that she achieved was traveling to Europe and studying art. Her personality changed during the trip where she turned into a graceful, principled woman. When Laurie arrives in Europe and starts hanging out with her, he discovers her new self and realizes that she would be a good wife to him, and they get married.
Marmee March
Marmee is a wise, principled, motherly, empathetic, self-sacrificing, patient, moral woman. She’s very caring, she would sacrifice her own comfort for the sake of others. Marmee is a great listener to her children and loves them dearly, she would do anything for them. She guides her daughters and emphasizes principles through stories and lessons. She’s a hard worker and an ideal housekeeper. Marmee is patient, considerate, honest, nurturing, and full of internal strength. Though it might appear that being a “perfect mother” is easy, she confesses to Jo how she’s nearly angry every day of her life. However, with time she has learned how to manage her frustrations. Despite their family's poverty, she does not encourage her daughters to marry for money. She feels that the most essential things in life are hard effort, faith, and strong principles.
Theodore Laurence
Theodore Laurence, known as Laurie, is the March girls' wealthy next-door neighbor. He becomes like a son and brother to them. Laurie is intelligent, handsome, and a gentleman. Though, he can have a mischievous sense of humor at times. Laurie has always grown up with wealth and privilege, which he sometimes takes for granted. At his worst, he can be spoiled, selfish, and self-indulgent. He has the strongest friendship with Jo out of the March girls since they have the most in common. Laurie struggles with his grandfather's expectations of him, much like Jo struggles with becoming a lady. Since he does not want to enter the business world, Laurie is not manly enough for his grandfather. As time progresses, he creates feelings for Amy later on when Jo rejects him.
