- Charlie is a student of Ms. Kinnian and works at a Plastic Box factory. He is interviewed by some doctors and is chosen for an IQ-raising surgery.
- Falling action
- The surgery is a success and Charlie starts getting smarter; he beats Algernon, reads Robinson Crusoe, etc.
- Falling action
- Dishwasher boy falls at the diner and Charlie has a realization that he needs to use his newfound intelligence to help people like his past self
- Resolution
- Charlie works very hard researching the Algernon-Godorn effect and disproves Dr. Strauss' theories- he sends the doctors a letter showing his findings
- Algernon dies and Charlie cries. Charlie has begun to regress (forgetfulness, fatigue, etc.)
- Charlie has completely regressed to his past intelligence levels and decides to move away from New York so he does not have to face his coworkers, Ms. Kinnian, and the doctors.
