- Charlie Gordon, 32, is developmentally handicapped and has an IQ of 68. He has beenselected for an experimental procedure to boost his intelligence. The treatmenthas already been effective in a mouse named Algernon, and the physicians arehopeful that it will work for Charlie as well.

- Charlie'sintelligence hasn't kept up with his mental intellect since the procedure. Heunderstands that his bakery pals and others have been nasty to him throughouthis life.
- Falling Action
- Charlie quits hisbakery job because the others are now treating him suspiciously and with fear.They have no idea what is going on in Charlie's life. Charlie acquires so muchknowledge that he swiftly outperforms his doctors. He becomes progressively estrangedfrom the individuals he encounters with, including Alice, as he develops asense of camaraderie with Algernon.
- Resolution
- Charlieand Algernon are escorted to a scientific meeting in Chicago to be presented.As they reveal films and images of him in early interviews that he was unawareof, Charlie grows increasingly agitated. He departs with Algernon for New York.Charlie realizes he doesn't have much time left as Algernon begins to regress
- Charlieand Algernon return to the lab to continue Charlie's research. He calls itquits on his romance with Fay. Charlie visits his mother and sister afterAlgernon passes away. His mother is senile, and his sister Norma looks afterher. Charlie and Norma reunite because he realizes he won't be able to play"big brother" for much longer.
- BeforeCharlie's regression deepens, Charlie and Alice ultimately consummate theirrelationship. Charlie's moods push her away after only a few weeks together.His coordination, spelling, and grammar continue to deteriorate. As he submitshis final progress report before moving into the Warren home, his final wish isfor someone to place flowers on Algernon's grave
