  • Exposition: Charlie Gordon is a developmentally disabled 37 year old man living in New York. He has an IQ of 68 and takes night classes at an adult school. He has been selected by Dr Strauss and Dr Nemur to endure an experiment that is said to triple his IQ.
  • Falling action
  • 5 6 30
  • After having consistent races against Algernon the mouse (who has already had the operation) through a maze to test his abilities, Charlie gets the operation. He now has an IQ over 200 and is smarter than everyone around him. He is above all of his peers and becomes increasingly lonesome, resorting to creating a relationship with Algernon
  • Resolution
  • After showing symptoms such as being unusually disturbed and vicious, Algernon passes away. Charlie is now faced with the possibility of the same thing happening to him. His goal is to figure out why the mouse's sharp regression happened, and how he could avoid it.
  • favorite scene
  • Charlie works and studies for extended periods of time in hopes of understanding his situation. He knows he's been following in Algernon's path since the beginning, meaning it's likely it will continue to be that way.
  • Charlie begins regressing.  He lies in bed for days, not understanding the things he once could. After trying to hang on to some knowledge and failing, he comes to the conclusion that he will just go back to how he was before the operation. This process happens quickly- within weeks. Finally, he moves away from New York because he doesn't want people knowing what happened to him.
  • Shortly after the operation, Charlie reconfigures machinery at the factory he works at, impressing his boss and coworkers. He then receives a raise.
