- Charlie Gordon is a 37 year old man who works at a factory. He has an IQ of 68. He gets an opportunity to get an operation to double his IQ. He is tested along with a mouse named Algernon. He writes progress reports and through that we can see whether or not the operation works. As well as with his behavior changing. 
- Falling Action 
- Charlie gets tested by a man who gives him a Rorschach test. Charlie is scared he failed it but, Dr. Strauss and Dr. Nemur still choose him for the experimental surgery. However, they don't know if it will be permanent. 
- Resolution 
- Charlie gets made fun of by his co-workers. He realizes that all of those times that they laughed at him, it wasn't because they were his friends it was because they were making fun of him/his condition. He left his job and this was the turning point for him and what made him want the operation to work so he could be smarter. 
- Favorite Scene
- The surgery works and Charlie's IQ rapidly increases. He can type his progress reports quicker, his memory is incredible, and he can learn everything very quickly and easily. However, the doctors start to see signs of regression in Algernon. They worry that the same thing will happen to Charlie. 
- Charlie has completely regressed. He went back to how he was before the surgery. His brain deteriorated as quickly as it developed. He started to have dementia, emotional instability, and he became absent-minded. He could no longer read and his writing and spelling mistakes became worse. He refused to see anyone. Eventually, he went back to his old job but he decided to leave New York for good, he wanted to go some place where no one knew who he was and what had happened to him.  
- Charlie stands up for the dishwasher boy that got made fun of by other customers. He see's the old Charlie in the boy and decides to use his new intelligence to help others who has the same condition as him.
