Storyboard Text

  • EXPOSITION
  • Charlie is 32 and developmentally disabled. He is a baker and takes classes at the Beekman College Center. He is being considered for a surgery that could make him smart like Algernon the mouse, who has already gotten the surgery.
  • RISING ACTION
  • Charlie's intelligence grows exponentially after the successful surgery, he falls in love with his teacher, Alice, but is unable to pursue a relationship because he has difficulty navigating his sexuality. His coworkers begin to resent him for his increase in intelligence
  • RISING ACTION CONT.
  • Charlie's emotional intelligence also develops rapidly, and he starts to remember painful things from his childhood. The lab team at Beekman studies him closely. Charlie leaves his job at the Bakery and grows close with Algernon.
  • CLIMAX
  • The Beeker doctors take Charlie and Algernon to a scientific convention in Chicago. Charlie is upset with feeling like a lab experiment and runs away with Algernon. After running away he starts a brief new life, and befriends Fay.
  • Charlie notices Algernon's behavior changing, and leaves his relationship Fay, to focus on what is happening to Algernon. He devotes his time to studying intelligence, as Algernon's intelligence slips and Charlie's begins to regress as well. When Algernon dies, Charlie buries him.
  • FALLING ACTION
  • RESOLUTION
  • Charlie's intellectual regression quickens, but he is able to have a short relationship with Alice. Before he is sent off to the Warren Home, his last wish is for someone to put flowers on Algernon's grave.
