- A year later US launches explorer 1. This was made by the Army. 1958

- The army actually created the first rocket. Later in that year in 1958 NASA was created and they started the Apollo mission. Apollo started 1961
- Alan Shepard, first American in space. 1961
- Before project Apollo, project Mercury was created to get a man into space. 1961
- Luna 2 was the first space probe to hit the moon. 1959
- First woman to go to space 1963
- Project Corona launched a Satellite to take pictures of Russia and gather intelligence in secret. 1960
- Apollo 8 was the first mission to orbit the moon. 1968
- In the same Apollo 11 mission the flag was placed. 1969
- Apollo one was going for an oxygen test run but caught on fire killing the people inside. 1967
- Apollo 11 landed on the moon 1969. This marked that USA won the space race.
- A lot of money went into NASA. from within 3 years when it started. 1961-64
- Apollo 13 was a rescue mission where they orbited the moon to return to Earth. 1970
- The Space Race actually ended in 1975 when the two ships linked up and shook hands.
- There have been a total of 12 people to walk on the moon.
