Storyboard Text

  • Act 1 begins with Gloucester and the Earl of Kent discussing King Lear's latest proclamation and
  • The sisters Goneril and Regan argue that they love their father the most while Cordelia, the favorite daughter, says nothing. Lear goes into a rage while Kent tries to calm Lear down...
  • "I love you more than word can wield matter"...pg 14
  • Within the meeting room, King Lear makes an announcement that he will split his kingdom between his daughters based on which daughter loves him the most.
  • .... which leads to Lear getting angry from Cordelia's response of nothing and then stripping Kent of his Lordship when he defends her.Goneril and Regan plot to stab Lear in the back later on.
  • "Peace, Kentcome not between a dragon and his wrath". pg 15
  • Act 1 Scene 2: This scene begins with Edmund, the bastard son of Gloucester,asking Nature why bastards are more looked down upon by societyand resolving to steal Edgar's inheritance.
  • "Legitimate Edgar, I must have your land." pg 33
  • Gloucester then enters the room asking about the current events and Edmund lies that Edgar is out tomurder Gloucester, as well as lie about where he found the letter.
  • "I found it thrown in the casement of my closet" pg 35 (lie)
  • Gloucester then in a fit of rage gives Edgar's inheritance to Edmund and denounces his son. Then Edmund, the two-faced liar, lies to Edgar who comes in after their father leaves...
  • "this villain of mine comes under prediction" in reference to Edgar pg 39
  • Edmund "asks" Edgar what he did to upset their father and then tells him to go armed walking around the castle to set him up.
  • Meanwhile, in Act 1 Scene 4, Lear calls Goneril a kite for asking to reduce his knights and storms off to Reagan.
  • "degenerate bastard" pg 63"detestested kite, thou liest". pg 65
  • The fool, Lear's advisor, then comes in and addresses that his daughters are sour like a crab apple and his other actions are foolish. The scene ends.
  • "for though she's as like this as a crab's like an apple" pg 75
