King Henry the II and Thomas Becket, the archbishop of Canterbury, had a falling out over how to rule the English law system.
Thomas Becket left to France for 6 years
When Thomas Becket returned he heard that some of the Priests of England had began to work for the king so he excommunicated them and fired them.
After hearing the news the King was furious and in a fit of rage started ranting about how he wanted the archbishop gone.
Some of the Kings knights overheard him. They took him quite literally and in a turn of events in the Cathedral in Canterbury Thomas Becket was murdered
Thomas Becket had become a saint as he died for his religion and after hearing of his murder the King went into mourning as he didn't mean what he said. His knights were fired but not excecuted.
