  • Emperor Constantine building Constantinople on the land of Byzantium in 330 marked the beginning of the entire era of the Byzantine Empire. Constantinople lied between the Mediterranean & Black Sea, allowing it to quickly grow into a wealthy trade city. attracting a large population. The success of this city then set a foundation for the success of the rest o the empire.
  • Justinian's Law Code is one of Byzantine's most important legacies. This specific codification is significant because it served as a basis for laws over the next 900 years. The laws we see today about criminal justice, marriage, property, slavery, and women's rights all stem from Justinian's creation of this law code.
  • The fall of the Byzantine Empire to Ottoman's Empire was caused by a number of reasons. Similar to the fall of Rome, factors such as the empire being too large, sickness and disease, and decline of the economy all played into Byzantine's gradual collapse. Because of this, Ottoman's Empire was now capable of uninterruptedly expanding throughout eastern Europe, beginning a new era in history.
