- In the first crusade, there was massive infighting with the Muslims leading to an easy taking of Jerusalem.
- What Pope Urban didn't expect was how we would treat the holy land when we won, Jerusalem was pillaged and those living there were massacred.
- Unfortunately after long periods of fighting, the Muslim leader Zengi captured the city of Edessa in 1144 CE.
- This sparked the second crusade which failed to win back the lost cities.
- After many battles King Richard I made an agreement with Saladin that would last 5 years, to give protection to Christian Pilgrims. and protect the territories owned by each
- In the third crusade, the Muslim leader Saladin captured Jerusalem in 1187
- most of the later crusades failed
- In the 4th crusade, constantinople was robbed and the byzantine empire split.
- In the 5th cusade, the crusaders attempted to get to Jerusalem through Egypt which eventually failed
- The 6th crusade was successful, The roman emperor Frederick II managed to sign a treaty with al-Kamil to give Christians control of the Holy Land.
