  • The Little Rock Nine was a group of nine African American students enrolled in Little Rock Central High School in 1957. Their enrollment was followed by the Little Rock Crisis, in which the students were initially prevented from entering the racially segregated school by Orval Faubus, the Governor of Arkansas.
  • The Little Rock Nine became an integral part of the fight for equal opportunity in American education when they dared to challenge public school segregation by enrolling at the all-white Central High School in 1957. Their appearance and award are part of the Centennial Celebration of Women at Marquette.
  • Elizebeth Eckford arrived at Central High School alone. As a result, Eckford was alone when she got off the bus a block from the school with a white mob shouting at her and glaring and calling her racial slurs, Eckford tried looking for a friendly face in the crowd and when she thought she had, the lady turned and spat at her and also only to be turned away both times by Arkansas National Guard troops.
  • i have chosen this Source (B) because it shows how The white people were so irritated by someone with a different skin color attending their school. They spat at them and treated them so badly, that even Elizebeth felt threatened and also to them they thought African Americans shouldn't have no rights let alone attend their own school.

  • The Little Rock Nine was important because it became a part of the fight for equal opportunity in American education.Their attendance at the school was a test of Brown v Board of Education, a landmark 1954 Supreme Court ruling that declared segregation in public schools unconstitutional. Eisenhower sent in federal troops to escort the Little Rock Nine into the school. It drew national attention to the civil rights movement.
  • After the first year, only one senior graduated from the Little Rock Nine (Ernest Green) after that the school shut down.
