- 8pm 2053
- Hello, in there..
- But-
- Put your hands up!
- Exposition -- Mr. Mead beginning his normal walk as he has been doing for several years now. The reader is informed that it is eight o'clock in the evening in the year 2053.
- What are you doing out?
- Walking.
- Walking!
- Just walking.
- Walking, just walking, walking?
- Recognizing he seems to be the only one out in the town, he whispers to the families inside the houses, observing the silence and darkness around him.
- Where are you taking me?
- After passing the once busy major intersection, Mr. Mead is approached by a patrol car and a "metallic voice" appalled by Mr. Mead walking at night.
- That's my house...
- In the blinding rays of the car before him, Mr. Mead is interrogated by the officer. Wondering where and why he has walking, his address, whether he has a viewing screen in his home, and if he is married.
- After explaining that he has been walking routinely for years, Mr.Mead is abruptly told to get into the car with harsh seating and the strong scent of antiseptic. He asks where he is being taken to with a reply from the voice saying the Psychiatric Center for Research on Regressive Tendencies.
- The Psychiatric Center for Research on Regressive Tendencies.
- As Mr. Mead is being driven away, the car passes the dead, tomblike houses. Nearing the one abnormal house brightly lit, Mr. Mead recognizes it as his own, the town now rid of the abnormal character.
