Storyboard Text

  • Soil formation is the first step in primary succession. this ecosystem starts out lifeless, nothing but rocks. Although, soon lichen will grow and cause the rocks to break down into dirt.
  • Early in primary succession, lichens and mosses colonize bare rock and become the first ecological community.
  • Moss will grow once the soil is present. When it dies, the soil thickens due to the addition of organic materials. Animals or the wind will then carry seeds to that location. Weeds and grasses will develop as the soil thickens and eventually when the weeds and grasses die they are then reincorporated into the soil.
  • when the soil is thicker, small bushes and pine trees will eventually start to grow. pine trees usually grow in areas like this because they are known to rely on less nutrients and water.
  • as the soil becomes even thicker, the pine trees will die off from the lack of sunlight and deciduous trees will replace them since they grow much taller.
  • lastly, the ecosystem finally reaches its last stage known as the climax community. where its a very matured forest with many plants and animals.
