- Mom what is Buddhism and why is Kapilavastu so important, and what is the Four journeys?
- Well son Kapilavasta is where the creator of Buddhism Siddhartha Gautama and where his Prophecy was fulfilled. The Four journays are the trips that Siddhartha took outside the palace. Buddhism is a religion that goes through reinarnation to get to nirvana a state of peace.
- Oh so Buddhism is a way of life, But what is the four noble truths Eightfold path, Caste system, Enlightments
- Ok that is lot to explain but i will try my best to explain
- Ok
- The Eightfold path is a way to achieve nirvana and a way to Buddha like Siddhartha did when he meditated under the bodhi tree, and achieve enlightenment (wisdom). The Four Noble Truth is the way life is. Lastly the Caste System is like a ranking but Buddhism rejects the caste system.
- Ok now i understand that bit. Did Buddhism have missionaries?
- Yes. In fact missionaries spread buddhism through trade, and the traders became a crutial part in spreading buddhism in India.
- Alright I get that part, but who is this Asoka and the this Mauryan Empire etc.
- Well Asoka is the grandson of Chandragupta, person who started the Mauryan Empire
- Asoka is the one who made edicts for Buddhism after the bloodbath in Kalinga. That is when he became a more peaceful ruler, made a dharma, expanded Buddhism throughout the empire, and made roads (resting stations) for weary travelers.
- So Asoka made edicts like to treat people fairly and humanely which cause others to religious toleration.
- And don't forget that Asoka made many stupas in his time.
- After Asoka died didn't the Mauryan Empire die with him?
- Yes it did than the Andhra Dynasty took over. After that Gupta Empire began.
