Storyboard Text

  • Hi my name is Clara Barton and I was born on December 25, 1821 and died on April 12, 1912.
  • After receiving a formal education, Barton became a teacher at the age of 15. Twelve years later, she founded and was headmaster of a free school in New Jersey where 600 students were eventually enrolled
  • Clara Barton did not have any formal training in nursing. She, like many women in the nineteenth century, acquired her nursing skills by nursing a member of her own family. In Barton's case it was her older brother, David, who was seriously injured in a fall during a barn raising.
  • Clarissa Harlowe Barton, known as Clara, is one of the most honored women in American history. Barton risked her life to bring supplies and support to soldiers in the field during the Civil War. She founded the American Red Cross in 1881, at age 59, and led it for the next 23 years.
  • After leaving the Red Cross, Clara Barton remained active, giving speeches and lectures. She also wrote a book entitled The Story of My Childhood, which was published in 1907.
  • Barton's experiences in the Civil War and in Europe taught her the necessity of providing nursing care and emotional support as well as supplies after natural disasters, and ensured that the Red Cross was able to care for the health and well-being of the victims as well as helping with food, clothing and shelter.May
