When we woke up the next morning, our kitchen was filled with food. All of it was from Tom Robinson's family. A thank you to Atticus for helping him.
It was a while after the trial that a series of events started that would change our lives.
The first shocked me to my very core. Mr. Ewell threatened Atticus. He told him he was out to get him. Atticus was not worried, but Aunt Alexandrea, Jem and I were. Atticus assured us that he would be fine, but there was something so unsettling about it. It made me worry for Atticus's safety.
Atticus said he had brought bad news. Tom Robinson was dead. He had tried to escape prison and the guards shot him. Atticus felt they had had a strong chance to get an appeal. Now it was over. When Atticus left Aunt Alexandrea folded over in a chair and put her head in her lap. She wanted to know when this would be over. She wanted the pain this was causing Atticus to stop.
One afternoon, not long after the threat, Aunt Alexandrea had ladies over for tea. She had invited me to sit with them. It made me feel special, like a lady. I then heard the voice of Atticus. He called Aunty into the kitchen, and I followed.
The third event was one that would leave a lasting impression on me.. It took place on Halloween night. I had been asked to play the part of a ham in a pageant at the school. Jem was going to be my escort.
The pageant went poorly as I fell asleep backstage in my costume and Mrs. Merriweather said I ruined the whole play. Jem made me feel better, but I decided I wanted to walk home in my costume.
As we were walking home from the pageant Jem and I heard a rustling behind us. We started to walk faster until we broke into a run. We were being chased!
