  • A Punnett square is a square diagram used to predict genotypes in a cross or breeding experiment.
  • Wow!
  • Every single organism has 2 alleles.
  • An allele is one of two or more different versions of a gene that are found at the same location on a chromosome due to mutation.
  • After 2 alleles are combined, what happens?
  • So why does Chanel wear glasses?
  • A genotype refers to a pair of alleles. There are three possible genotypes: AA, Aa, and aa.
  • A phenotype is an organism's set of observable features or qualities. Height, appearance, hair color, skin color, and etc.
  • If an organism has two copies of the same dominant allele, it is homozygous dominant, and if it has two copies of the same recessive gene, it is homozygous recessive.
  • AA = homozygous dominantaa = homozygous recessive
  • What if one allele is dominant and the other is recessive?
  • Although poor vision is neither a dominant nor a recessive trait, it does run in families.
  • Heterozynous means that you have two different alleles of a gene.
  • Aa = Heterozynous(one uppercase & one lowercase)
  • How can we see what traits we inherited from our family members?
  • I have one allele for blue eyes from my mom and one allele for brown hair from my dad. The two different alleles affect what I look like but it depends on which trait is more dominant.
  • A trait is an organism's unique characteristic. Traits can be determined by genes.
  • Neither of my parents wear glasses but after looking at a pedigree chart, I found out I must get my eyesight from my grandparents!
  • A pedigree chart is a genetic representation of a family tree that shows how a trait or disease is passed down through generations.
