  • Hello there! My name is Curtis Carter, and I am an activist for progressivism. Four of my friends will be giving their "sides of the story" to show why progressivism could be beneficial to society. The main objective of the Progressives was to stop corruptness of private interests and political posses. To start us off, Kelly will be talking about the union workers.
  • I'm Kelly, and I am a Union Worker. My husband andI work in the same factory, and my 4 year old son used to work here as well. Child labor was a major problem, so Child Labor Laws were introduced to solve that problem, and establish a minimum wage to make wages more fair. Work in the factory is a dangerous job, and many people got injured of killed, so Workers Compensation was introduced to counteract this issue. My friend Ashley will talk about the problems which the Settlement Workers faced and how they fixed them.
  • Us Settlement house workers try to help the poor and newly immigrated citizens of our urban areas. In order to alleviate some of the problems and stress of the less-fortunate members of our society, a more well-known member of our group, Jane Addams, built a house in the slums of Chicago. Many immigrants when first coming to the United States weren't too fluent in English, to to help them out many schools and kindergartens were made to allow them to seamlessly fit into society.
  • Muckrakers were also part of the Progressives. The muckrakers were journalists, writers and photographers in the Progressive Era. The specific problems they worked to fight were corporate monopolies and political manipulation, and did this by providing accurate and detailed accounts of the political and economic corruption caused by many big businesses across the country.
  • Farmers encountered quite a few problems as well during the Progressive Era. The Homestead Act helped the farmers a little bit, but gave the best land to the railroads, and they needed the best technology to produce the best and most crops. On top of this, weather was a major problem that affected the yield of a farm. To fight against these problems the farmers formed the Grange, and the Grangers tried to change State legislation to regulate natural monopolies such as railroads and this removed natural privileges of lands which the railroad companies got, allowing them to get good land as well.
  • Those were the problems and solutions from the perspectives of the Union workers, Settlement house workers, Muckrakers and Farmers. Some successes of the Progressive Era are the election reforms and stop of corruption and fraud by the Eighteenth Amendment, and the Sixteenth Amendment being the income tax to fund public services. A failure of Progressivism is the fact that although corruption was fought against, it didn't fully redistribute power from political lobbyists and other corrupt politicians. Although this is true, Progressivism changed American society to be more accepting of immigrants, help those less fortunate, and fight against political corruption.
