At the beginning of time, the earth was covered with water.
There's this place called "Sky Land" that had a great sky tree that provided those who lived there with food.
In the land lives an old chief and his wife Aetaentsic. As the chief got older, he became ill. In order for him to heal, he has to eat the fruit from the top of the Sky Tree. The ill chief sent his wife to retrieve the fruit for him.
According to the American Literature Book, "Aetaentsic took her husband's stone ax and went to the great tree". The tree split in half and fell through a hole. She then went back to her husband to tell him what happened and went back to the hole and threw herself into it.
As Aetaentsic falls through the hole, turtle sees her and called all the other water animals for help. All the water animals dove down and brought up soil and placed it on turtles' backs. When they finished, they made an island "of great size".
As the sea animals were through, Aetaentisic settled down on the new earth while parts of the tree fell beside her. This is how the world came to be.
