CIVIL LIBERTIES are rights that are explicitly stated and protected in the Bill of Rights/Constitution or interpreted through the Constitution in legislatures and courts.
Liberties like this protect people like me from tyranny.
Liberties refer mainly to what's found in the Bill of Rights.
CIVIL RIGHTS prevent unequal treatment and discrimination based on personal characteristics (i.e. gender, race, sexual orientation, disability, and religion). Civil Rights are largely established via claims/court cases based upon legislation.
You can't buy this house because you are Muslim.
You are discriminating against me and violating my right to equal opportunity for housing!
Examples: housing, employment, education, and access to public facilities
REMEMBER: Just because something is listed in the Constitution doesn't always make it the true definition of a civil liberty. Cases such as that of the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments (abolishment of slavery and right to vote for Black Americans) and 19th Amendment (right to vote for women) are actually cases based on RIGHTS because they deal with discrimination against a specific group.
It is our LIBERTY to be able to eat here!!!
1) What right is affected?2) Whose right is affected?
The combination of rights and liberties that are given to U.S. citizens allow for fairness and just treatment of individuals by both the government and the people around them.
