One night that winter, tragedy struck our little neighborhood. One of our neighbors, Ms. Maudie's house caught on fire. Everyone in Maycomb was there that night. Jem and I were so intrigued by the fire that I did not notice when a man put a blanket on my shoulder.
Summer came and went yet again and with the seasons changing, Dill returned home.
When Atticus said we should bring it back to the Radley's, Jem burst into tears. He told Atticus all the trouble we had caused the Radley's, and in all the ways Boo had tried to contact us. Atticus understood, if we gave the blanket back, Boo might get in trouble. We decided that we would not give the blanket back. Who knows what might have happened to Boo if we did.
In the morning, Atticus asked where the blanket was from. When I could not answer, it occurred to Atticus that EVERYONE in Maycomb was out last night. The blanket was from Boo Radley. He had seen me shivering and brought it to warm me up.
It was around this time that Jem got in a spat with our old neighbor, Ms. Dubose. She kept calling Atticus names and I think it got the best of him. He cut all fo her flowers into a million pieces. In order to make it up to her, Jem had to got read to her for a while every night. Even though he hated it, Atticus made him keep doing it as punishment for destroying her flowers. After sometime, Ms. Dubose passed away. She left something for Jem. A single flower. Atticus told Jem that even after she had called him all those names, he thought she was a brave lady. A great one even. She just had different opinions than him.
After the fire, Atticus got a new case. Normally, we would have never been affected. But this case seemed important. Mr. Bob Ewell was accusing Mr. Tom Robinson, a black man, of raping his daughter Mayella. Kids at school started to call Atticus names. It caused me to get into a few fights. Then, Atticus told me no more fighting.
As Atticus was called away for work, we spent time with Calpurina. It was one Sunday that we went to church with her.
At the sermon, the reverend talked about how they were starting a collection for Tom Robinson, the man who was Atticus's client.
She was coming to stay with us for a while. I thought that it was because of Atticus's trial.
After we got home from Cal's church, Atticus's sister, Aunt Alexandra, was at our house.
Dill had run away from home. His mother had gotten remarried, and he felt ignored by her and his new step father. Jem went and retrieved Atticus. Atticus told Dill's Aunt Rachel, and after many phone calls and pleading, it was decided that Dill could stay in Maycomb for the time being.
Aunty had been with us for some time now. It was late one night, and as I was walking into the room in the dark, I stepped on something. I called Jem in to help only to find it was Dill! Jem had almost brought a broom down on him!
