Storyboard Text

  • The Kaibab and Abert's squirrel used to live together in the same habitat by the Colorado river.
  • Over time, boulders made the river deeper. With the help of volcanoes, the Grand Canyon was formed, which separated the squirrels. This was an example of allopatric speciation. They become isolated and couldn't cross the new barrier.
  • Since isolation from each other, the 2 squirrels evolved distinct characteristics. I couldn't show it in the picture, but the Kaibab squirrel has a white tail, dark grey or black sides and underparts, and a russet or brown back. The Abert squirrel is mostly light gray in color with a black or dark gray stripe down their backs and white underparts.
