When the District Commissioner hears that the leaders of the village burnt down the church while he was on a trip he asks them to meet with him at his office. The six leaders, including Okonkwo, go but they bring machetes. The District Commissioner tricks them and brought soldiers to take them to jail where they will be humiliated and beaten. They can be released with a fine of 250 bags of coweries
They have a meeting with men from clans all over the nine villages. The meeting is about the damages that the white man and his church has caused to the clan and destruction to their gods and ancestrial spirits
Here is Okonkwo
The speaker reminds the clan they might have to go to war with the white men, but in the middle of the speech five court messengers approach the clans, and their leader orders the speaker to stop this meeting now.
Okonkwo kills the court messenger with his machete, his clansmen step back from fear. They question his violent action. Okonkwo realizes that nobody supports him and knows he can not save his village and its traditions no matter how hard he tries. He also realizes his beloved Umofia is on the verge of surrender so he feels defeated and worthless
The District Commissioner arrives at Okonkwo's compound and finds a group of men sitting outside. He asks for Okonkwo and they say he is not home. The commissioner asks again and Obierika repeats the answer again. Obierika leads the District Commissioner to Okonkwo for in return some assistance. They go behind a small bush and find Okonkwo hung on a tree.
