Echo is a mountain nymph who helped distract Hera, Zeus' wife, while he was cheating. After Hera found out, she was angry at Echo for talking so much and cursed her. She took away her speech and only allowed her to say the words that were just spoken to her. After being cursed, Echo was wandering around and saw Narcissus hunting and immediately fell in love with him. Narcissus called out "Who is there?" and she could only repeat the words he said. They came face to face and Narcissus who was incapable of loving anyone but himself cruelly rejected Echo. This caused Echo to become upset and flee, leaving her voice behind.
