Robert S. Abbott founded The Chicago Defender on May 5th, 1905 in a small kitchen in his landlords apartment. Abbott initially started Chicago Defender with a 25 cent investment. 5 years later, The Chicago Defender became a famous newspaper with many attracted readers who were updated every week.
For a while, Abbott was working out of his landlords with a very low investment, and about 3,000 copies to start off with. Defender got the name of being the nations most influential black newspaper, that updated readers very frequently, while being the advent of WWI.
