Storyboard Text

  • Before the war, president James K. Polk wanted to buy the land in the modern day west of the United States. He sent American diplomat John Slidell to Mexico City, and offered Mexico $30 million for the land, however Mexico didn't even want to meet with Slidell.
  • In early 1846, America sent soldiers to the American Mexican boarder, and Mexican soldiers shoot and kill multiple soldiers. This was because both Mexicans and Americans thought they owned the land. On May 13, 1846, congress declares war on Mexico.
  • There were many battles after the war began, but a main battle was the battle of Buena Vista. This battle proved General Taylor to be a good leader for the war. America won despite being outnumbered, and it was a turning point in the war.
  • In September of 1847, America captures and occupies the capital of Mexico, Mexico city.
  • The war ended with the signing of theTreaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo on February2, 1848. The treaty gave the United Statesgave the U.S. the territories of California, Nevada and Utah, most of Arizona and New Mexico, and parts of Colorado and Wyoming. In turn, the Untied States paid $15 Million.
