  • Tensionsoverslavery were the main cause of the Civil War. The Northern states were against slavery while the South supported it. The South supported it because they needed slaves to work on their farms to make money. Both sides argued for several months about many parts of slavery. Eventually, the arguing turned into violence.

  • All slaves in Confederate states are free!
  • The Southern states thought that the US government wasn't being fair and decided they wanted to be their own country and have their own government. The president at the time, Abraham Lincoln, didn't like the south's decision. He prepared for war but was determined not to fire the first shots. The Confederate troops fired the first shots of the war when attacking Fort Sumter.
  • Battle ofGettysburg
  • The South had control over many crucial rivers. The Union wanted the rivers for themselves. To do this, they sent in a lot of ships down the river to overwhelm the Confederate defenses. In the end the Union gained control over rivers like the Tennessee RIver, the Cumberland RIver, and the Mississippi River.

  • The Emancipation Proclamation was when Abraham Lincoln made an announcement on January 1st 1863 saying all slaves in the Confederate states are free. The South was outraged about this decision because they needed slaves. On the other hand, the North was super happy and greatly approved of Lincoln's decision. Many slaves that were now free chose to join the Union army to help fight against the South.
  • The Battle of Gettysburg is known to be the biggest and most important battle of the war. The Confederate troops were in a town with many hills surrounding it. The first day of the battle the Confederate army pushed back the Union army. Then, the Union got reinforcements and secured the hills. Because they had the high ground, they ended up winning the war.
  • After loosing many crucial battles, General Lee surrendered on April 9th, 1865. The war itself didn't end until a couple weeks later. Lincoln said the Confederacy as a nation couldn't surrender because he didn't even believe they were a nation in the first place. Either way, the war was over. The end of the brought upon the 13th amendmentof the United States which completelyabolished slavery.
