  • Slavery was the primary cause of the Civil War. The Northern states were opposed to slavery, while the South was in favor of it. The South was in favor of it because they needed slaves to work on their farms in order to make money. For months, both sides argued about various aspects of slavery. The arguing eventually escalated into violence.
  • The Southern states believed that the US government was not being fair and decided to form their own country with their own government. Abraham Lincoln, the president at the time, was not pleased with the southern decision. He prepared for war but refused to fire the first shots. When Confederate troops attacked Fort Sumter, they fired the first shots of the war.
  • The South controlled many important rivers. The Union desired control of the rivers. They did this by sending a large number of ships down the river to overwhelm the Confederate defenses. Finally, the Union gained control of rivers such as the Tennessee River, the Cumberland River, and the Mississippi River.
  • The Emancipation Proclamation was issued by Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863, declaring that all slaves in the Confederate states were free. The South was outraged by this decision because they desperately needed slaves. The North, on the other hand, was overjoyed and applauded Lincoln's decision. Many freed slaves chose to join the Union army to fight against the South.
  • The Battle of Gettysburg is widely regarded as the war's most significant battle. The Confederate troops were stationed in a town surrounded by hills. The Confederate army drove the Union army back on the first day of the battle. The Union then received reinforcements and secured the hills. They won the war because they had the advantage of having the higher ground.
  • General Lee surrendered on April 9, 1865, after losing many crucial battles. The war itself didn't end for another few weeks. Lincoln stated that the Confederacy could not surrender as a nation because he did not believe they were a nation in the first place. In any case, the war was over. The end of the resulted in the United States' 13th amendment, which completely abolished slavery.
