- I’m glad you asked.Did you know? This dam uses the energy from water to generate electricity, which powers up millions of homes, including our own.
- Dad, why have they built this large dam? What does it even do?
- Yes! Well, water first falls from the sky, converting potential energy to kinetic energy. This energyis then used to rotate the turbine of a generator to produce electricity. In this process, the potential energy of water in a dam can be turned into kinetic energy which can then become electric energy.
- Really? How?
- Well, that’s the lawof the conservation of energy?
- Wow! But how is energy just simply converted?
- This law is basically a rule that states that energy can never be created nor destroyed, it can only be converted from one form to another. In this case, potential energy is converted into kinetic, and then into electrical energy.
- What is that?
- Yes, son! But remember, not 100% of the total energy is converted. Some of the energy is lost as heat or sound. For example, when electricity is converted to light at home, some of the energy is lost as heat. That is why when we sometimes touch the bulb, it feels very hot.
- Woah!!! Is that how our light bulbs work at home? Electrical energy is converted into light energy, so that we can see things at night.
