- Hayes is from Ohio, he was Cincinnati's city solicitor the Republican's platform continued their strong commitment to the civil rights of emancipated slaves.
- What was the Compromise of 1877?
- Tilden is from New York, he was a lawyer and party chairman of New York, the Democrat's platform wanted to continue the reconstruction.
- Neither won at first but Hayes would have had the required votes while Tilden didn't but it was a controversy because the independent person in the group of 15 resigned and a republican took his placing making Hayes win.
- It was that the democratic party wouldn't attempt to reconstruct the south and to let them have self government.
