  • India was once a British colony in the early 1900's. Britain exploited the natural resources in this country. There, the Indians faced#160; cruel discrimination and the high taxes from Britain were driving them into poverty.
  • These taxes are too high!#160;
  • This kind of living is unbearable!
  • Use passive resistance to pressure Britain to into giving our independence!
  • Many Indians wanted independence from Britain, but their army was much to powerful for them to take on, so Mahatma Gandhi came up with a plan.
  • Gandhi organized many nonviolent protests, like the famous Salt March that built nationalism in India. When innocent Indians were beaten by the British for protesting, this news spread through the media as well.
  • Gandhi was arrested several times for his actions, but he was fasting in jail. Having Gandhi die in the cell would not only outrage Indians, but spread through the media. The British were pressured into releasing Gandhi several times until....

  • The growing nationalism in India and risk of the media pressured Great Britain into giving India it's independence in 1947!
  • A part of India was partitioned for the Muslim Indians, which saddened Gandhi who was assassinated in 1948 by a Hindu Indian. Gandhi still lives on as an Indian hero.#160;
