- This period of time from the late 1870's to the 1890'sin Georgia is known as the Bourbon democracy. "Bourbon" refers to a powerful ruling class. During this time,growth in business and industry was encouraged by three democratic leader known as the Bourbon Triumvirate.
- International Cotton Expositions
- Henry Grady was the editor of the Atlanta Constitution newspaper from 1880 to 1899.He was a vocal supporter of industry in Georgia.In a famous speech.Grady described the South as a region rebuilding toward a brighter future.He called it"New South".The name stuck, and the time from 1877 to the mid-1890s is called the New South Era.

- The term "New South" refers to the economic shift from an exclusively agrarian society to one that embraced industrial development. Influential southerners such as Atlanta Constitution managing editor Henry W.
- Tom Watson
- In 1881, 1887, and 1897, Atlanta hosted the International Cotton Expositions, industrial fairs that spotlighted attention on the state's cotton textile industry.Grady was a key organizer of this event, and he used the Atlanta Constitution to get more people excited about Georgia's industries!
- In 1890, there were 100,00 Farmers' Alliance supporters in Georgia. The next year, the Farmer's Alliance helped form an official political party- the Populist Party. The Populists represented farmers and the "little people"(non big-business) throughout the South, and they challenged the dominant Democratic Party in Georgia by threatening to split the white vote and bring black Republicans under the influence.
- Tom watson was the most influential Populist leader in georgia. in 189-, Tom Watson started his national political career by running as a democrat for congress. With the help of the Farmers' Alliance, he was elected to the interests of poor sharecroppers(both black and white).
