  • Over here!
  • Hey, Harold, you wanna play basketball at recess again?"
  • "Yeah, sure. Let me just finish."
  • Have you ever experienced a moment in your life that affected the way you value yourself? Well, if so, you probably understand self-worth. The small experience I had helped gave me a chance to reevaluate myself and realize my self-worth, the event changed the way I developed as a person.
  • It was a great day, a nice day. The sun reflecting across the wet grass, the light breeze and smell of freshly cut grass filling the air. A quiet nonchalant day, one where I could feel each second passing. “Who wants to be the line leader?” My teacher exclaimed to the class. As our class entered the cafeteria, I immediately started looking for my friends’ table, when I spotted them, I couldn’t wipe the smile on my face. I was always happy when I saw my friends at the table. I remember me and my friends were a mainly Asian group at the time, and there weren’t many Asian kids at my school either.
  • “Hey, Harold, you wanna play basketball at recess again?” I said. “Yeah, sure. Let me just finish.” He said as some older kids began to walk by.
  • “Hey!” One of the kids yelled through his cupped hands. I looked up and saw 2 taller older boys standing at the front of our table, one of them squinting his eyes and saying, “Ching Chong!” His friends imitated him and continued to walk by whispering something under their breath. My heart beat slow, I didn’t understand why, it was like I couldn’t move, like I was stuck in place. I never did like confrontation with the older kids because they were intimidating. As the day continued, I couldn’t forget about the situation.
