  • 3rd Place
  • “on January 19, 2006, [Donald] Thomas was sitting in the cafeteria at Lindenwood University in Saint Charles, Missouri, boasting about his slam dunking prowess with a few guys from the track team.” (Epstein). In this scene it shows that Thomas was already good a jumping as he could easily slam dunk the ball in basketball. A high jumper at his school thought he could not jump 6 feet and 6 inches in high jump competition. But he was proven wrong as Thamos jumped higher than excepted him to in the competition.
  • “an invisible deck chair backward through the air, Thomas cleared 7’3.25”, a Lantz Indoor Fieldhouse record” (Epstein). Him being in a blank top, white Nike sneakers and baggy shorts. He qualified for the national champions in his first try. After the first try he set a Lindenwood University Record. On the third try he set 7 feet and 3.25 inches where than the coach thought he may hurt himself or get a leg injury.
  • “he placed fourth in a world-class field, a result that actually confused him because he did not yet understand how tiebreakers work in high jump and thought he was in third place until the results were announced.” (Epstein). Thomas was in a Professional Jumping game called the Commonwealth Games wearing tennis shoes. With Thomas’s inexperience in professional games, he thought he placed 3th, but really, he placed 4th in the game. After this he became serious and did 8 months' worth of training.
  • " laser-focused Holm as the favorite. Thomas, looking cool in sunglasses beneath the bright lights illuminating the stadium, was described as “very much an unknown quantity" (Epstein). When Thomas enters the stadium, nobody knows who he is or what his capabilities are in jumping. While Holm is like a shining diamond, that everyone knows and thinks is going to win the Olympics. Simply put this shining diamond puts a shadow on Thomas.
  • “Holm was cruising, passing over 7’3”, 7’5”, 7’6.5, and 7’7.73” without a single miss, as his father watched through a video camera and pumped his fist in the stands” (Epstein). Holm’s practice has led him to reach the level of the Olympics. Holm just keeps getting higher jumps every jump as he gets motivation from his father who is in stands. This is holm’s most intense moment as he wants to be the champion of the Olympics yet again.
  • “on his winning jump, Thomas raised his center of mass to 8’2”. Had he any semblance of the back arch that every other pro jumper does, he would have shattered the world record” (Epstein). Thomas learns of the semblance of the back arch. He jumps and without a second thought wins. He is the new jumping Champion and does not even care, he calls high jump boring. Genetic potential beats overall practice and the success of players is based on the overall genetics of the player. Resulting in genetics playing a huge role in sports.
