Storyboard Text

  • Thomas competes in World Championships
  • Thomas is able to clear the 6'6 Jump with ease
  • Thomas is described as an unknown quantity
  • In paragraph 6, "August 2007, with a total of eight months of legitimate high-jump training to his name, Thomas..." (Epstein). Thomas was able to compete in world championships with only 8 months of practice. This was a much lower amount of time to practice compared to others in the competition. He was able to compete and place well because of his Achilles’ Tendon however, which is longer and stiffer in length.
  • Thomas places well at the World Championships.
  • The text stated, “...Mattis had already set the bar at 6’6”...”To Mattis’ amazement, Thomas cleared it easily” (Epstein). This was when Thomas had literally no high-jump experience. He was able to clear this difficult feat because of his Achilles’ Tendon which was larger and stiffer than average.
  • Scientist Masaki Ishikawa examines Thomas, finding his Achillies’ Tendon is above average in length and stiffness.
  • Paragraph 7, “Thomas, looking cool in sunglasses beneath the bright lights illuminating the stadium, was described as ‘very much an unknown quantity’” (Epstein). This was during the world championships, and Thomas was described this way because he had never been at a world championship, yet he was still able to compete with the top high-jumpers in the world. This was in no small part thanks to his lucky genes, which gave him a much bigger Achilles’ Tendon.
  • Paragraph 10 states, “Then came Thomas... he passed 7’8.5 on his first attempt” (Epstein). Thomas cleared this nearly impossible feat on his first attempt, showing multiple signs that he was inexperienced along the way. He was able to accomplish this thanks to his lucky genes.
  • Paragraph 13: “Ishikawa noted both Thomas’s long legs relative to his height and also that he was gifted with a giant’s Achilles tendon” (Epstein). This was a professional scientist who was trained to examine people and he found Thomas had very much enhanced genes. Thisi was why Thomas had an advantage in high-jumping.
